I'm so excited my Mum's come to stay with me for 3 whole weeks!!! All the way from the UK. My 2 year old little girl asked to make her Gaga a 'Special' Box the other day ..... she had drawn her some lovely pictures and wanted to give them to her when she got here. So I grabbed an old wooden cigar box I had been keeping for a rainy day, a can of white spray paint .... some permanent ink pens .... a can of gloss finish and here you have it! Kawaii cute, no?! Gaga's treasure chest ♥ ... it's since been filled with lots of lovely handmade goodies from both myself and my daughter and I really can't wait to see my mum's face when she opens it :)

I've had a change of Pattern Plan .... you know how I wanted it to be Boy Month .... well I am afraid you're going to have to wait a little bit longer for my super duper Kawaii boy doll. Why? Because the pattern is a Unique Dolls And Daydreams design, a NEW Style completely different to any of my other kawaii patterns ... not only will you love him but you'll find him incredibly easy to make with my tutorial ....

and ...... I want to make sure he has a friend to keep him company ♥

Not to let you down, I have been working on a little cutie pie of a dolly. Can you guess from the photo? Yup, a beautiful Little Flower Fairy! I had the flower fairy book as a child and the Poppy Fairy was always so stunning to me .... I think it was her butterfly wings .....

So my little Flower Fairy has lovely wings inspired by the Blue Morpho butterfly ..... I'll post her sketch in the next few days ... can't wait to hear what you think of her :)

My Creative Space: My Little Sailor Boy

I finally finished my Little Sailor Boy artwork I have been creating for my son's nursery. My hubby, an avid fish enthusiast came up with a nautical theme for his room. The wall's are in fact powder blue with a white chair rail around it.... The Ikea frame has been sitting empty ...

..............when my daughter suggested in one of our arts and crafts afternoons that I do a 'Ponyo' picture for 'Baby's' room.... If you haven't seen Ponyo you should, it's adorable. And of course was just perfect for the 'theme'.

This is made using my daughters construction paper and her colored pencils ... not an heirloom piece by any means but I thourally enjoyed doing it (with help from her!) ... and my little chap thinks it's pretty cool too :)

Oh and candle holders and sconces are the best for displaying some of his huge collection of toys hehehe

What a wonderful way to start the New Year!! Thank you to Suzanne Kelly of Hipstitch for sending me this lovely photo of the group of girls she taught to sew. What a brilliant idea! I'm honored that their first sewing project would be made from my pattern! All they did was have their parents purchase a pattern/tutorial, print it out and then they took it along to the class where Suzanne walked them through every step! And now each of them has their very own Easy Girl Dolly!
Well done girls!!! Those dollies are adorable!

I hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas/Holiday! I did thanks :) So what's with the felt watch? Well, I wanted to get my lovely hubby a new watch ..... but I knew he would have to pick it out ..... sooo I whipped up this life size gem (which is now in my daughters dress up box!) and popped it along with an 'I O U' note under the tree :) Needless to say it went down very well and I got a smile too!

I also finished a very pretty 'little' something for my daughter ...... here's a sneak peek! I might just share her with you all .... but you'll have to wait until February! Why so long?!

Well I have dedicated January to BOY PATTERNS!!! Hooray!!!! And as you all know, the first one on my list is a Lion! Ooooowww and he's looking very lovely! I'll have to show you the sketch soon ...

Tiny Tot is here! Well almost!!! I named her Tiny Tot because ........ she's tiny alright! She might only be 7 inches tall ... but she's big on cuteness!! She's my kawaii version of a toddler: short, cute and a little chubby hehehe I love her already!! She uses up all my scrap material in a flash but she's not too fiddly, so it means she's going to be a favorite gift to whip up for all my friends little girls this holiday!!!

And take a look at this fab vintage fabric I found. Only two tiny quilt squares of it, but as i don't need much for her, they turned out to be the perfect size!!! I can't wait for you to meet her ..... and as she's my last pattern for this year .... well I am sure she's rather excited to meet you all too :)

There's a Piggy in my Sketchbook!

My pig sewing pattern is coming on a treat in my new work room! He's a sweetie to make and I managed to find some stripy fabric for his tummy that is cute for a boy or a girl ... even if it is pink!

I have had the owl and the pussy cat nursery rhyme in my head the whole time ..."and there in a wood a Piggy Wig stood ... with a ring at the end of his nose" ... but I held off, no ring for this porky .. I have to say I just couldn't help but smile each time I made this little piggy wiggy ..... it's his cheeky little face that gets me every time!!

Sewing room makeover all finished!

Well my little blog hiatus is over I'll be back online for regular sewing gossip goodness now that my sewing room is all finished! Wow.... do i have a lot to tell you ... and show you! Thank goodness I have such a craft hubby with crazy building skills (and a little help from Ikea) as I was lucky enough to get a fully functioning pattern making room .... in the heart of the house .....

As you can see space is still an issue. And that's why I will be selling some of my lovely softies and dollies from my personal collection this month .... but I'll get back to that later ......

Everything has it's place now. Ikea really is the best for these open plan houses here in the US. Back home in my 400 year old cottage in the English countryside it would look a tad out of place, but here, it divides up rooms and creates wonderful storage for me.

The baby gate is a must of course! Not that I'll be sewing much when my munchkins are up and about ... but it means I can leave pins out and half finished dollies with out little hands touching them.

Did I say my fabric was in the garage ... well this is all I have managed to sort through to date ... I am sure I'll be getting to the other boxes soon ... but I really needed to get my room up and running so I could get back to work ... :( I missed my dolly making far too much!

No more art room either, let's face it I don't have time for painting, if i'm not writing up a tutorial i'm working on one of the 3 patterns I have on the go at any given time ... with prototypes scattered here .....and there ....

As for art work in my sewing room ... ahhh I like simple vintage pieces, just added a few inspiring words and printed them out! Thanks to The Graphics Fairy for her fab free downloads (you can find them here).

And my cork board which is so handy for ideas and keeping track of my doodled dollies was made yet again by my clever chap .... out of floor tiles! It's brilliant and I love my shelf too ... although it's almost full already!

There's my wonderful Viking Sewing machine on the fold out table to the left ..... Oh and I LOVE the Ikea fabric storage boxes! stops little people crawling through the shelves and of course is stuffed full of trim and buttons, and scrap fabric and .... well you get the picture! Can you see how I labeled them :) ?! I came up with a non permanent way as i was sure I would be shifting things around down the road ....

Wooden clothes pegs! Fabulous, quick & easy to write on ... cheap & cheerful and of course ... removable :) Plus, some draws ended up with 2 or 3 on them as I could fit different things in there.

I love my new room! And I love how convenient it's location is. I no longer feel banished to the other side of the house and when the kiddies are napping it's so easy just to pop in and do a quick bit of sewing .....

Guess Who's The Birthday Girl :)

Why so quite ..... Well apart from the new sewing room which I'll show you all photos of tomorrow, it was my Birthday this week!!! I know .... getting older by the day ... please will someone tell me how time seems to just disappear once you have kiddies :)

When I was a little girl, my favorite birthday present of all time was my sewing box from my Nanna and Granddad.

When I was a teenager it was a necklace my Mummy gave me ... and I still wear it to this day ...

In my twenties it was marring my wonderful husband (yup on my birthday!)

In my 30's .... it was a hot bath and 3 hours uninterrupted sleep ..... ahhhhh blisssss ... simple pleasures!

I wonder what 40 will be ...... :)

When your two year old toy tester turns to you and tells you that you have made Daddy and Baby Brother owl … you know you have missed the mark ….. So I went back and looked at all my mommy & baby owl sketches and my inspiration. Yup, she was right, I had turned my back on my normal Kawaii Cute style for the more Retro vintage style instead. Silly woman! It just wouldn’t do ….. no no I needed my little girl to smile again!

So now I have updated my pattern to include my Kawaii Cute Mommy and Baby Owl, with hair flowers too! 2 styles in one pattern! Hooray!

She loves them, I love them and it means my little boy get’s his own set now! I’ve made a whole family now, just like mine!

I am in love with my little sister mini dolly! She’s as cute as a button and only 11 inches tall. She loves getting hugs from her big sister … but she’s not quite ready for you all to meet her … she’s a little shy …

She’ll be having her photo shoot this week and hopefully I’ll be able to get her finished for next week ….. my teething little baby boy has me up every hour at night (I kid you not, I'm like a zombi right now!) for a cuddle so …… sorry for the wait!

This sketch of Mummy/Mommy Owl cuddling her baby was all I needed to get going on these two lovable softies. I wanted a simple retro vibe to them and picked a really crazy print for their heads and matched my felt to it for their wings.

The hard part was making Mummy’s wings flexible to hold her baby but easy for others to sew …. I figured it out and just LOVE how cute she looks cradling her little one …… Ok off to give my little bubs a cuddle!

Has it really been 3 Months?

After a tough week I thought I'd share some happy news with you all .... My little man is already 3 months old! Where does the time go? I had all the time in the world when my little girl was born ... now I blink and it's gone .... Yup that's me these days, no time to do my hair, forgot my jewelry, *oh quick darling snap the photo! I cry* ... and ....not a stitch of makeup on ....Hmm not bad for waking up 4 times a night with my hungry chap!

You all know I spend my spare time sewing but I have also had the pleasure of watching my little girl turn into a big sister! I love the way she wants to help with everything, passing me his diapers/nappies and botty cream. Her favorite line is, “Mamma Mia, baby poopoo” and she springs into action! Where did this little Italian girl come from? Well she heard her US grammy say it once and it’s stuck! It makes me laugh every time!

Just like her mother, she loves to dress up, and is always ready to go out on the town.

She loves baking cookies with Mummy … and yes that is straight butter on that spoon!

Phew it’s tough being a ballet dancing fairy princess!

Ok off to finish my Santa Pattern,

Christmas is here early in my house! I sketched up my Santa Doll 2 months ago if you can believe it! So I already have 3 finished Father Christmas softies looking lovingly at me from my shelf … cute but he still needs a few finishing touches, sooooo fingers crossed I get him out for next week!

Here’s the plan, I have 2 surprise softies up my sleeve and some other cute girlie dollies … but first I must finish off my 4 Christmas Patterns …. Did I say 4! Whoopse, I wasn’t going to tell you hehehe ….

Why the rush, it's not even November I hear you cry!!!

Well I have decided that they will be limited time only patterns (all rather exciting!) So once I take them down in December, that’s it!! No last minute sewing on Christmas Eve!!

Ok back to work I go …..

Even though we spoke last week …. I didn’t say ……..

Thank you for the toys you stashed away in the cupboard for our visits when we were young from Christmas’s passed. Thank you for your chocolate covered Mars bar rice crispy delights, Sunday roasts with all the trimmings and letting us play cowboys and Indians under the grand piano.

I am sorry I can’t be there now to say goodbye one last time and for my brothers and sister and Dad …. And I am so so sorry you didn’t get to meet my son….

I love you Grandma, God Bless …

Mary Antoinette is in My Sketchbook

I’m making a Mary Antoinette Doll for my daughter’s Christmas present … I know it’s a tad early to be making her her gift now but as you all know (if you read my blog a bit) I have about 4 patterns on the go at once …. This one has just taken over!

I am having so much fun making her…… I’ve been giddy with excitement picking out the fabric and trim … I mean come on, I can go overboard with this dolly ….. I only have to look at the movie photos and I start drooling over the costumes!

This dolly has been brewing for some time now. Almost a year in fact hahaha, that's when I did my first sketch ... but she's come a long way since then......

I just love the famous line ‘Let them eat cake…’ How was I going to get that into the doll ..... well they always put things in their hair back then ... feathers, flowers, even mini ships ...... and so I popped some cupcake appliqués in her hair!!!! It’s soooo girly and cute I know my little one will go gaga for her!

Because this dolly is so special to me I wasn’t going to publish her, but then I thought that was rather selfish of me as I am sure other little girls (and their mummys) would love to have/make her too…..

I’m hoping to have her finished by next Thursday (US) time, Friday (AU) time …. And then I can really get stuck into my Christmas Patterns!

Selling at Craft Markets and Fairs: How to Set Up Your Stall for Success!

All the photos I comment on are of Sarah’s fabulous stall from Cotton Kiwi (NZ). She’s a pro when it comes to setting up her table … plus she runs Devonport Craft Market (NZ) so she’s a pro when it comes to Markets in general!! Haha

What makes a successful booth display... by Kristen

Use short phrases for your items. Display them in a grid like these fab rose broaches.

1. People do not like to read -
Short, direct phrases placed strategically around your booth will inform the customer without them having to stand there and read. So simplify it as much as you can.

2. The most important items should be placed in the middle -
I mean the vertical middle. They should be neither on the highest rack or the lowest. The first place the eye goes to is straight out, and then generally up and then finally down.

and then popped in the vertical middle of the table for max exposure.

3. Think grid system -
Start by laying your items out in a grid... in neat rows... and THEN you can start to change it up slightly... tilt something here.. raise something there. But having everything be different and crazy and off skew can get muddled very easily. You want the customer to take it all in, not just glaze over your entire booth as they walk by. So simplify your display into grids and then throw in a surprise every once in a while.

Use different hights to add interest to your stall

4. Different heights -
While still keeping things in a general grid pattern, make it more interesting by introducing different levels to your display. If everything is just laying on your table, the customer can just quickly glance through all of it. Challenge them by raising some items up higher...it will take them longer to look which means more time at your display. I do this cheaply and easily with those clementine crates you get at the grocery store (just cover them in fabric or place under your table cloth).

Also by repeating similar colors your eye goes up/down the display of toys.

5. Color is one of the most effective tools -
If you are conscience in how you arrange colors, you can create a really effective display! If you have something orange, for example, on the right end of your table, put another orange thing in the middle and then one more on the far end. Repeating colors draws the eye... it moves from one orange to another.. so that the customer views your entire display.

6. Free samples = smiles -
I always have some sort of free sample that I give to customers.. dog treats, hair bows for children, stickers, etc. This gives me an opening to draw people in and start a conversation. People might also remember you if you were the kind lady who made their screaming child stop and smile. I've had many people come back to my booth and say that they bought my earrings, etc because I gave their child something.

7. Pay attention -
Finally, if you go to a show and find that several people are confused about something or think your dog tags are keychains (like me)... fix it! I heard several people mumble, oh they're keychains.. and walk away.. so I made a big sign right above my tags that says "Pet ID Tags... waterproof, durable, custom made". And I noticed at my next show that some people looked at the tags and said "oh" and then looked at the sign and said "oooh" LOL So make sure you are always paying attention to your customers, even the ones who do not buy... because maybe there is a simple reason for it.

Doll and Softie Party Dress Sketch!

So I decided my dolls would love a pretty party dress to play in........ and guess what …. The pattern will be in my shop next week! Hooray!

306 Dolls for the children of Indonesia.

Friends Peace Teams to Indonesia began after the 2004 tsunami devastated Aceh. Nadine Hoover, travels to Indonesia to help tsunami and war survivors in Aceh and North Sumatra and she set up this wonderful Doll Drive for the children.

“Play structured to support the development of young children greatly supports the development of parents and teachers as well when they engage in the play themselves. Play also reminds us of the fundamental authority of life itself—being alive.” Nadine Hoover.

The Dolls for Indonesia Campaign, using my free Dolly Donations Doll pattern and if you look closely there are few Easy Boy and Girl Dolls in there too ..... which I’m excited to see :) ...... set out with a goal to collect 200 dolls. Everyone in the community (and neighboring areas) got to sewing, from Girl Scouts, to Grandma’s. And talk about a success, well they not only got their much needed 200 dollies for the children, but their grand total was 306!

How fantastic!

The dolls traveled over to Indonesia in 4 suitcases and are happily living out their days playing with children in schools across the country.

Sometimes my dolls are mirror images of my sketches, sometimes they are a tad different, and sometimes, they are merely a starting point to jump off from …… my lamb is pretty much this sketch :) and you’ll be meeting him/her this Wednesday! Hooray!

Ribbon Tag Owls for Children in Hospital

Cynde (USA) who is a member of the Hoag Hospital auxiliary in Newport Beach CA has been busy making my Ribbon Tag Owls.

Aren’t they cute!!! And what makes these little guys twice as lovely is that Cynde is making them to give to each of the children that enter the Hoag Hospital Emergency Room!!

What a fantastic idea Cynde! Something sweet and cuddly to put a smile on a kiddie winks face!

How to Use Cotton Appliqués Instead of Felt, A Doll And Softie Making Tutorial

Want to create a different look for your Dolls and Softies? Why not try cotton appliqués instead of felt ones.

“But Sarah, cotton frays!!!” I hear you cry … this is true, but there are a number of ways around this.

Here are my top 3 methods. Best of all, they are fast and really easy!

1) Add a Seam Allowance.

Take your felt pattern piece and add a ¼ seam allowance around it. You might have to modify the pattern piece to make it easier to hem, but once you have hemmed it, simply use it as you would your felt.

2) Use Fusible Interfacing.

I love the stuff! It’s quick and easy and allows you to use intricate shapes, such as tails, and noses plus it stops all fraying edges in its tracks! There are many types out on the market, just follow the manufactures instructions … but here’s a tutorial for you all :)

a) Cut out your tail in both fabric and fusible interfacing/webbing and iron the fabric and Fusible interfacing together (following the manufactures instructions.) You can also opt to fuse your fabric and the interfacing together prior to cutting out your tail.

b) Cut around the tail with your pinking shears.

c) Peal off the paper backing and postion it onto your back body piece, approximately an inch from the bottom and sew 1/8 of an inch from the edge all the way around.

d) Pull each of the thread ends through to the back and tie off in a knot. And your done.

If you don’t use your pinking shears around your tail, be sure to sew it in place using a tight zigzag stitch (or satin stitch) to stop fraying.

3) Fray Check.

Always test the fray check on a piece of fabric first to make sure it will not stain. Cut out your appliqués piece and go around the edge with your fray check, set it aside until it is dry and then sew. You can use a decorative stitch around the edges, a tight zig-zag or just sew around 1/8 from the edge.

How to Whip Stitch - fab for felt!

The whip stitch is ever so easy and fast. Some people close there softie with a whip stitch but I don’t recommend it for that as it makes the softie look unfinished and a tad ugly if I say so myself … I always choose the invisible Ladder Stitch to close.

However, the whip stitch is lovely and secure (so good when making toys for kiddies under 3), and is great for closing fabrics with multiple layers or that are really thick. I love it for felt. It can look brilliant when you use the same colored thread as your fabric (here I used black so you’d be able to see it) and incorporate it into your design.

Simply pass your needle through both pieces of fabric and follow the direction as shown in the diagram. Try and keep the stitches the same length. You can either keep the stitches straight (as in the diagram) or at an angle as I did in the photo.

Big Doll Martha's Proceeds to be Donated to Make-A-Wish, Hooray!

Martha has been a very busy young lady! Along with all her friends in the Sewing Sisterhood (AU) she has been traveling around and seeing so much!

She’s very excited as all of her proceeds from her on-line auction and her assorted goodies in early December will be donated to Make-A-Wish® Australia! Which helps support children with life-threatening medical conditions and brings happiness to the child and their family by granting wishes.

Plus she got to go to a quilt fair ........

....... and have a few more cuddles along the way ….

......... And let’s not forget the beach! What a lucky Dolly!

Aleksandr Orlov the meercat is here! Not heard about the massive Meerkat craze to sweep the UK, well after you see the adverts for Compare The Market (comparethemarket.com) or should I say Compare The Meerkat (comparethemeerkat.com) you’ll fall in love with them too!

Who would have thought selling car insurance could be so cute! Guess what there’s a whole family of them, and since the company started selling toys in July they have become the no.1 sort after Christmas gift and are selling out all over.

So after some very heartfelt e-mails from my lovely sewing ladies in the UK desperate for a pattern to make for their little ones and to sell at their craft markets, I am going to come out with my own Meercat too! Hooray! Soooo watch this space :)

My Creative Space: Ribbons and Tutus!

Wow what a week! I have been battling an infection and now my little chaps reflux is through the roof. So not much sleep, and yes I have sick up on my top as I type!

I’m pretty amazed I even managed a few prototypes. But it’s my sewing that keeps me sane and I am very happy to get the odd 20 minutes here and there to pin or sew etc …....

............ and yes I listened to you all my lovely friends for this pattern and you voted (via my facebook page) to be surprised!!! Next was ….. you wanted a new dolly to make ……

Let’s Sew with Faux Fur - A How To Guide in the Making!

As you all know I love adding different textures to my softies. Why stick to one fabric choice when you can add in a few more! Before the little chap came along I started playing around with Faux Fur .. and I haven’t been able to put it down since.

After a few trips to the library, scouring the internet and buying some fabulous fur clothing design books I decided to compile all I knew and gear it towards softy making. All this research really took me back to my Masters Thesis!

With so many different choices of faux fur available I was out buying up all I could find. It’s just amazing the difference the fur makes on how you sew up a softie! The good thing is I have found there to be a few general rules to stick to, and of course I came up with my own method!

Can you guess what new pattern I have been working on?

Well when I show it off next week, there will be a new chapter of the Dolls And Daydreams adventure available, yup, my very first full color photo and instructional “How To Guide!” How exciting!

Pricing & Selling your Dolls and Softies

As you all know I allow for everyone that purchases my sewing patterns to sell items made from them in limited quantities and I’m often asked what price someone should be selling them at. How is it that one person sells a doll at $30 and another at $40 when they are using the same pattern?

Well here’s how I price my finished dolls:

I take into account my Material Cost.

How much was my cotton, felt, stuffing etc. For example: If someone were to use a wool felt compared to a craft felt (I don’t recommend craft felt!) it’s much more expensive, but the client gets a superior doll that will last longer, so you need to factor the price difference in.

Different stuffing, e.g. Bamboo vs. polyester are different prices and cotton can be very expensive depending on the pattern design, and quality.

Then I look at Time.

How long did that particular doll take to make? Did I have to cut lots of felt out using up my Freezer paper stash? Does the owl take me longer than the bunny? Did I make an outfit to go along with the doll too?

Now let’s look at Talent.

Did I hand embroider the face vs paint it? Did I use felt appliqués instead? Did I add some trim and different additional appliqués to the doll not called for in the pattern? Are all my seams straight and neat, would I like to buy this doll?

Market, competition, what’s out there?

Research your market.

If you’re selling online, e.g. etsy, see what others charge for similar items (but remember to take quality materials etc into account, you need to compare apples with apples!)

Personally, as you all have seen how detailed my patterns are, I like to go above and beyond what is available. With such a saturated market place such as etsy, you need to stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s amazing customer service, beautiful packaging, or eco friendly materials etc you need to try and find your niche.

If I am doing a craft market I like to know who else is out there and what they are charging, and if they are even selling. Do your homework and go to the market as a ‘customer’ before you set up a stall.

Remember to factor in these additional cost, such as renting your space or online transaction fees.

Ok …. So know I am sure you are just baffled!!! But pricing really all depends on what you have spent, how much is your time worth and what your market is willing to pay.

At the end of the day my best advice is to test the market, try different price points and see what your clients in your area are interested in. You want to be able to sell your toys and see happy little kiddies smiling faces as they hug them …. :) ... but you must be fair to yourself & talent too!

How to print your own Fabric Labels using a Hand Carved Logo Stamp

I’ve had the pleasure of peeking through the ever so talented Chantal’s, from Chantal Vincents Art (Au) online blog portfolio for some time now. I adore her hand carved stamps and all the creative ways in which she uses them!

So when we got chatting about stamping on fabric, I was thrilled that she wanted to do a guest post and share her creative talent with us all!

This is a very simple process for making your own material tags or patches for quilts, dolls or any other item requiring your logo printed onto fabric.

What you'll need.

Fabric paint. The one I use (available in Australia) requires simple heat fixing using a hand iron for 2-3 minutes. Instructions for different brands and types vary so best to read them before you purchase.
Fabric to print onto. I'm using unbleached cotton. You may want to consider the need to prewash your fabric depending on where the tags will be used.
Scissors
Scrap of felt at least the size of your stamp
Pen
Cardboard or paper to protect your table surface.
Spoon or paint brush
Your Stamp (a tutorial for making your own can be found here)

1. To create a stamp pad use the base of your fabric paint jar as a guide for a circle that will then be cut to sit inside your fabric paint lid. Please note this will only be useful if your stamp is smaller than the lid. If not, cut the felt about 1 cm larger than your stamp and apply the same steps below using an old plate.

2. Spoon a small amount of paint into the fabric paint lid, spread around and then lay the felt over the top. Push the felt onto the paint with the back of the spoon until the paint starts coming through the felt. Add a little extra paint to top of the felt if need be but be careful not to overload with paint or the stamp will not give you a clean print.

3. Press your stamp face down onto the paint, gently pushing down across the full area so that the coverage is even.

4. Start by testing your stamp on a scrap piece of fabric. My first print was on the far left, you may be able to see a few marks on the girls face. These didn't show when using the stamp on paper, however, with fabric there is more give and the paint is thicker so I can see the stamp now needs extra rubber removed. On the second stamp you can see the face marks have been removed but now lines outside, to her left appear so also need removing from the stamp. Finally in the print on the far right I have a nice clean image and we're now ready to print up lots of tags.

5. When finishing your first session of stamping the felt can now remain in the lid whilst you fix it back on, ready to use again next time. Don't forget to heat set your stamped fabric as required by the instructions on your paint. Have fun!

My Creative Space: My Little Mermaid Girl

As you all know I’m taking a bit of a "baby" break, but before I packed everything up there was one last pattern I had to make! My little girl loves the water and as we have a pool it is a priority of ours that she learns to swim ASAP!

She's been splashing and giggling for months with her Daddy, and he promised her that once her baby brother was here she would get to have swimming lessons! Hooray!

I found this amazing fabric, and started making her fishy friend for when she's all done with her classes!

And I mean I was making this right up until crunch time!! Hahaha one contraction here, one stitch there! Hahahaha

My Son’s First Softie - Ribbon Tag Owl

Looks like someone has a new friend! My son’s first softie had to be one of my Ribbon Tag Owlets.

With his Mummy a softie, dolly fanatic I thought it only fitting

I start indoctrinating him at a young age hahaha

He’s only a few days old, but he’s already focusing on the high contrast eyes of his new owlly! Hooray! He’s so sweet to watch and my 2 year old makes the best twit-ta-woo sounds ever!

These are the kind of memories that last a lifetime!

We have a strong suspicion he has reflux and a milk allergy (via my BM) like his sister had … so we’re off to the Doctors today ….. hmmm no more yummy cheese for mummy :(

Puppy Dog Softie Stuffed Toy Sewing Pattern Finished! Hooray!!

They are finally here, my lovely little puppy dogs sewing pattern! They are so friendly, and love a good back stroke and tummy tickle from their "New Best Friends"!

House trained of course and they will play for hours outdoors too!

You can dress them up and they never complain (unlike my naughty Chihuahuas!)

But most of all, they love a good snuggle on the sofa at the end of the day!

Baby News: He’s Here!

A Big thank you to everyone for all your wonderful e-mails and comments, I am happy to tell you that my beautiful baby boy was born last week.

My ~~little~~ BIG bundle of joy, had decided he liked the house Mummy had made for him so much he had no intention of leaving! Unlike my daughter who was just over 6lbs, and a tight squeeze, he’d been predicted around 7.5- 8lbs but we were all in for a surprise!

One look at me on my due date “wow, you’re all baby Sarah!!” and my Doctor decided not to take any chances with him getting stuck like my daughter and convinced me to have a C-section. With bub’s a whopping 9lbs 1oz we were all relieved that I did!

I was surprised when they told me I’m anemic at the hospital and my recovery will be a tad slower than most. But I can’t complain as my little man and I get to hang out all day long, cuddling, feeding and sleeping …….. and blowing kisses to his big sister who’s having a ball with her Daddy all to herself!

Let's go home Mummy!

My Next Pattern: Puppy Love!

Still no Baby my end so I thought I'd share with you my Love for Dogs ♥ I have 3 of my own (this is buddy & I) ...... and as a child .... my favorite stuffed toy of all time was my dear dear ‘Whoofy’ dog (I was never too creative when it came to naming my toys or pets for that matter!). A little softie doggie with long spaniel ears and daschund nose. I guess he was a mutt!

So I decided to make a Puppy Dog Pattern! Hooray! And yes, there will be a bit of Whoofy Love thrown in for you all!

Looking for doggy inspiration I came across these lovely finds. They are majorly baby orientated, you’ll have to forgive me, babies are on the brain right now hahahaha

First off I couldn’t resist showing you this vintage Puppy in ThriftyChels store. I love the kawaii feel, and isn’t the eye patch super cute!!!

Another favorite was this to die for crochet ‘Custom Puppy Hat’ by Bethanys5 I can’t get over how cute everything in her store is and so reasonable too! Love the eye patch again …. Floppy ears too!!!

Talking about floppy ears look how adorable this Puppy Dog Applique by Sugarbumps Creations is!! Love the fabric colors, and the little hands either side!

And last but not least has to be this fabulous crochet Puppy Washcloth by Crochele I can just see myself with the new baba in the bath … and look at his long ears and eye patch!!!

Just think, this time next week I'll have had my baby! Hooray! Thanks everyone for all your lovely comments, they mean the world to me!! I'm just soooooo excited to meet him!

Baby News: Don’t hold your breath!

Still waiting this end! Yup, there we all were thinking he was coming on Wednesday and then nothing! He’s teasing Mummy that’s what he’s doing …. And kicking and pushing! So we’re back on for his official due date, the 15!!

I Love this fab retro fabric I found to use for it!

To keep my mind busy (crazy how the last few weeks drag on and on!) I have finished another pattern, hooray! So I’ll be releasing it after he’s here. So excited to share it with you all!

Someones happy Mummy got time to make another softie!!!

Ok off to sort through yet another pattern for this weekend. I plan on making the prototypes and go as far as I can with it …… whilst ignoring the stabbing pains in the tops of my legs hahahahaha!!!

How to Wash Dolls and Softies made from Felt and Cotton Fabrics

Janet from Felt on the Fly is back with a fabulous tutorial on how to care for your doll and softies made from felt and cotton fabrics.

As you know from her last Guest Post, cotton fabric is easily washed, and pre-washing cotton fabric ensures that the colors are color-fast, and that shrinkage occurs before assembling your project. Janet's wool felt does not require pre-washing and is color-fast.

Janet says "What I would suggest is that you pre-wash your cotton fabrics, assemble your doll, and when the doll needs cleaning, here's what you do:

Fill a sink with cool to barely warm water.
Use a small amount of liquid soap (dish soap will work just fine).
Soak the doll for 10 minutes or so.
Drain the water from the sink and press excess water from doll.
Rinse soap from doll.
Again, press excess water out.
Roll in a towel to remove even more water, and air dry.

All felts - wool felt, wool-blend felt, acrylic felt - require a little special care. I recommend the above instructions for any type of felt."

Wool Felt: Why Crafters Around the World Love It!

What a treat I have for you! The wonderful Janet from Felt on the Fly is here for a chat on ….. you guessed it, Fantastic Wool Felt! But this isn’t any old craft felt, no no no, this is soft, beautifully colored high quality merino wool felt from Europe.

Janet was sweet enough to send me a little sample. Really I shouldn’t be surprised at the lovely presentation of her product, she's been in the business of making sewers like us happy around the world for quite some time but you can’t help getting excited when something turns up looking like a Birthday Prezzy ….. and all for me!!

Once I opened it and saw the felt, well I knew the quality was going to be fantastic, but this is like butter! It’s so lush, the tones so delicate, my photos don’t do the colors justice.

Soft yet so strong. No see through thin bits, no pilling, or fraying loose felt edges, no this felt is just perfectly smooth and …. For lack of a better word .. YUMMY! Yes my mouth is literally watering, I bet I could make a few sets of dolly shoes and clothes out of these!!! But wait that means I have to cut them … NO!! They are too beautiful!!!!!

Trust me, if you’ve only worked with ‘craft’ felt, once you work with this you’ll never turn back!

I’m so happy that Sarah has asked me to talk a little bit about my fabulous wool felt. Considering how popular felt is as a craft medium now, and considering all of the choices of different types of felt available, it’s a pleasure to have this opportunity to talk about my 100% wool felt as it pertains specifically to doll making.

Way back in 1998 my son began attending a Waldorf school where I had the pleasure of meeting European moms who were hand-stitching the most adorable things from wool felt. I was in love from the moment I touched the stuff. From that point, I started researching, collecting and comparing. Now, I’m happy to say that I now possess a scary amount of knowledge about felt. (I assure you, other than that particular quirk, I’m actually quite normal!)

So why am I so committed to 100% merino wool felt? Well, for starters, I consider it to be ‘heirloom quality’ which means that it’s of the highest quality and suitable for your keepsake -worthy creations. Color Story 'Fruit Salad'

Are you wondering how to care for wool felt? Especially when it’s used in conjunction with cotton fabrics?

That’s a common concern since wool and felt typically require very different types of care. However, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know it’s easy!

As you know, cotton fabric is easily washed, and pre-washing cotton fabric ensures that the colors are color-fast, and that shrinkage occurs before assembling your project.
My wool felt does not require pre-washing and is color-fast.
So, what I would suggest is that you pre-wash your cotton fabrics, and then assemble your doll.

My Creative Space: Oh Baby!

I was lucky enough to be given this vintage bassinet. My father-in-law had lovingly kept it all these years, and yes, it is the same one my husband was placed in as a child. The wonderful vintage fabric surround and trim was made by his grandmother before he was born, the same fabulous woman who gave me my first sewing machine when I came out to the States.

So I spent the weekend carefully hand washing everything. Has it really been two years since I placed my little girl so small and snuggly into it?!

I am working on such a fabulous doll pattern (with the help of my assistant!) I can't wait to show you but....... I don’t want to give anything away with photos, needless to say, its baby related!! Hmm I wonder if you can guess what it might be :) ??!!!

Cat Kitten Tiger Leopard PDF Softie Stuffed Toy Sewing Pattern Finished

Meet my cute Kawaii Kitty Cat and her lovely Leopard boyfriend! They’ve been hanging out in my sewing room whilst I got my baby bumpy checked on Monday. All’s well, but after a weekend filled with stabbing pains we were beginning to wonder .... could he really come a month early ….. Nope, it turns out he’s sitting on a ligament in my leg! Ouch! Ouch, OUCH!!!

So these two very patient felines have been waiting for their big ‘Hello Kitty’ party!

This little Miss had her whiskers done especially for the occasion,

and this chap, well his tails all prim and proper!

Like most of the animals they know, they love to dress up too ….

....... And give big soft cuddles!!

My Creative Space: C is for Cat

So I have been a busy bee these last few days sewing my New little Kitty Cat Pattern up! I was naughty and took the weekend off for Mother's day (USA time zone!) but I’ll have her all finished this time next week!

Why the delay, well I've also decided I am going to tackle fur for her boyfriend … no not real fur, very very fake thick fur!! How fun will that be!!! At least I have a machine that will actually sew through it without jamming every 3 stitches!

I haven’t decided if I’ll make a Leopard or a Tiger yet ….. but after my test arm this morning I know I’ll have fun either way! Wow talk about a different way to sew! It’s like the fur moves on itself when the right sides are facing inwards. Not like silk, but more like it sticks to itself like Velcro …. I recommend lots of pins!!! I am sure there’s a knack to it I’m missing!
