NEW Sewing Room Make Over DIY

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 1A

Here's my NEW Sewing Room Make Over!  Ahh it's my slice of Dolls And Daydreams™ Heaven!

Remember where I was before?  It was getting rather crazy trying to fit everything into such a small space ... and once my little girl figured out how to open the baby gate and cut a chuck of her hair with my scissors   ... it was clear I had to move!

I've no before photos, think unfinished basement used for storage  ... think concrete walls and big red steal girders (don't they look pretty painted white! Almost like fairy lights) .... the tile floor was here ... but everything else my very DIY savvy husband created  ..... took him 2 months .. wow .....  and I love it!!!  "Thank you darling!!!!"  I've been down here for about a month and finally feel like I have made it my own :)

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 1B

Let me walk you though it!

A - I store all of my scrap felt and fabric, trim and yarn in these wonderful Ikea Shelves.
B - I draw up all of my patterns - sketch new designs and drink tea.
C - I cut & sew all of my creations up.
D - I prep all of my fabric, trim etc.
E - My escape route if my sewing machine jams ;)

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 2A

Over here is the sewing & photo tute area. I love the fact I have a natural light from a window and I get to plant lots of flowers ..  us Brits do love our Gardens!

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 2B

Right I didn't need to label the sewing machine ;) but ...

F - I love these plastic see through mini shelves!! I can see everything without opening them! Fab! So I store all my colored thread in the ones on the left and all my go to tools like my disappearing quilters pens in the one on the right.
G - Pin boards ladies are brilliant!!! I can hang all of my rulers, scissors and doll needles from them, you'll never misplace anything again!!
H - Daylight Light Lamp for my embroidery.
I - Pretty wicker laundry basket to store all my stuffing in.
J - My mini Ikea ironing board .. perfect for doll sized pattern pieces  Inside I store a mini vac for when I use faux fur ... that way I suck it up as I cut it out ... ahhh less mess.

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 3A

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh yup .. Hubby loves making tables .. and this one is on wheels ... wheeeeee! Brilliant and still has a ton of storage in it!

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 3B

Nothing too ground breaking here but ....

K - Another fab Ikea Shelving unit for my fabric this time!  Plus, if you have faux fur, I like to keep it stored in see through bags ..  reduces the shedding and you can still color match with your fabric swatches :)

fat 1/4 storage

M - you can't see it in the room photo ... but I love this plastic draws on wheels for storing my fat 1/4s in ... pull out a draw and ta da I can see them all.

And now you know where I sit as I type and chat to you all online :)

Sewing Room Make Over DIY Dolls And Daydreams 4B

hmmmmm .. lots of important things here to look at ....

N - Can't live without my Laptop!
O - This dolly is not only teaching me Chinese ... but she's always telling me she loves me and we're best friends ... ahhhh love that positive vibe!!  Plus she's super kawaii!
P - A hand painted tile I brought back from India for my Tea to sit on.
Q - Best mouse ever for stopping carpel tunnel .....
R - My new smart phone ... I love Instagram
S - Scrap bins.
T - Pin Board for design ideas etc  I'm very visual when it comes to creating :)
U - My tea cup hehehehe
V - My stack of current on the go patterns ....
W - Trash can/rubbish bin ... I have 4 .... one for scrap thread/fabric, 1 - general rubbish, and the other 2 for paper/recyclable

And there you have it!!  Hope you have enjoyed the tour ..... and the next time you are working through one of my patterns you can think of me here ... creating away with you!

New Hair!!

I have a mini Ironing Board in my Sewing Room

I don't know about you ... but I loath ironing .. unless it's fabric for making a dolly or softie of course!  As space is limited I decided to hunt around for a small ironing board I could keep stowed away in my sewing room.  I found the perfect one at Ikea of all places!  Not only do I love it for it's size ... but the price was crazy cheap ... and it had a clever little hook on the back.

All I have to do is flatten the legs down, push the hook up and it hangs flat down the side of my fabric shelving unit (see this post for more photos of my sewing room).  I have to say it perfect for me .. but I might just have to make a new more 'retro' fabric cover ... one of these days <3

Sewing room makeover all finished!

Well my little blog hiatus is over I'll be back online for regular sewing gossip goodness now that my sewing room is all finished!  Wow.... do i have a lot to tell you ... and show you!  Thank goodness I have such a craft hubby with crazy building skills (and a little help from Ikea) as I was lucky enough to get a fully functioning pattern making room .... in the heart of the house .....

As you can see space is still an issue.  And that's why I will be selling some of my lovely softies and dollies from my personal collection this month .... but I'll get back to that later ......

Everything has it's place now.  Ikea really is the best for these open plan houses here in the US.  Back home in my 400 year old cottage in the English countryside it would look a tad out of place, but here, it divides up rooms and creates wonderful storage for me.

The baby gate is a must of course! Not that I'll be sewing much when my munchkins are up and about ... but it means I can leave pins out and half finished dollies with out little hands touching them.

Did I say my fabric was in the garage ... well this is all I have managed to sort through to date ... I am sure I'll be getting to the other boxes soon ... but I really needed to get my room up and running so I could get back to work ...    :(      I missed my dolly making far too much!

No more art room either, let's face it I don't have time for painting, if i'm not writing up a tutorial i'm working on one of the 3 patterns I have on the go at any given time ... with prototypes scattered here .....and there ....

As for art work in my sewing room  ... ahhh I like simple vintage pieces, just added a few inspiring words and printed them out!  Thanks to The Graphics Fairy for her fab free downloads (you can find them here).

And my cork board which is so handy for ideas and keeping track of my doodled dollies was made yet again by my clever chap .... out of floor tiles!  It's brilliant and I love my shelf too ... although it's almost full already!

There's my wonderful Viking Sewing machine on the fold out table to the left ..... Oh and I LOVE the Ikea fabric storage boxes!  stops little people crawling through the shelves and of course is stuffed full of trim and buttons, and scrap fabric and .... well you get the picture!  Can you see how I labeled them :) ?! I came up with a non permanent way as i was sure I would be shifting things around down the road ....

Wooden clothes pegs! Fabulous, quick & easy to write on ... cheap & cheerful and of course ... removable :)  Plus, some draws ended up with 2 or 3 on them as I could fit different things in there.

I love my new room!  And I love how convenient it's location is.  I no longer feel banished to the other side of the house and when the kiddies are napping it's so easy just to pop in and do a quick bit of sewing .....

Hope you enjoyed my Sewing Room Tour :)  Pop back soon as I've got a little piggy wiggy in the works to show you all!  ... Oh and I will tell you about my Dolly Sale too :)  ... hugs!

Sewing Chairs, What do you use?

Most people ask you what sewing machine you use, but me, well I’m going to pose a simple yet important question, what chair do you use?

Why? Well let me tell you, there’s been many a broken stiff back in this house from a sewing project gone crazy and a rickety wooden chair.

My solution, I upgraded! Think Office Furniture!

Yup, I brought myself an ergronomical chair, it’s curved and cushioned, padded and perfect for my lower back (which is getting weaker and weaker these days!) and arm rests which are brilliant for when you sit back and ponder on what to sew next. The kid in me loves the wheels too as they save me getting up and down all the time and I can go wizzzzzzzzzzz across the room to my fabric stash!!!!

So if you ever fancy an upgrade, I know it doesn't look very pretty .... but I highly recommend getting yourself an office chair!
